Typical Job Duties of an ESL Teacher in Hong Kong

Finding teaching jobs overseas can put off a lot of people. It can be difficult to know what type of teaching you would like to do. Thus is important to learn the preparation as a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) in Hong Kong before you hop on a flight! 

In Hong Kong, teachers work with students of all ages to increase their proficiency with written and spoken English. However, apart from the academic, one of the duties of an ESL teacher include cultural education, with the teacher serving as a bridge between a student's native culture and the teachers' culture.

Here are some job details regarding an ESL teacher in HK
  • 25-30 teaching hours per week
  • 10-15 office hours per week
  • Maintain a positive relationship with managers, co-workers, students and parents
  • When students fall behind, teachers are expected to come up with solutions for helping the student succeed
  • Teacher training is also provided and your school will have materials for use during ESL lesson preparation
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress
  • Provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior required to run an orderly and productive classroom environment
